Ever since I went to my first movie on my own in Kirkwood Cinema I knew I wanted to do something with film.  Foregoing the journalism scholarship, I studied film at Columbia, the sister school to the Arts Institute in Chicago.  The very first film I ever made was called “Blood Poem” (1990) made on super 8 film – based on a poem I wrote… (who knows what happened to it) and “My Tribe” (1991?) which I made with the help of Steven Winter, now a producer (See Tarnation (2003).   Both films led to stuff like “Cultural Skit-zo-frenia” and “Memory Tracks”, which fused poetics with social commentary.   Also managed to get a commission to do a few shorts on Channel Four(UK) working with two different poets on 6 different shorts.

Oh yeah! Apart from appearing in my own films, I had a small part in Go Fish (1994 ) directed by Rose Troche, who had appeared in my film “Cultural Skit-zo-frenia”. Needless to say, Hollywood never came calling…Oh well.

MEMORY TRACKS
8 mins, Experimental

Great Britain (1996)

A woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown follows the afroed spirit of a revolutionary past through London's streets: Brixton and Portobello. I used the camera as the means for reflexive analysis of black female subjectivity and performances of resistance in urban spaces, specifically within the context of London's Portobello and Brixton.
